STATION 01 – LEADING UP TO THE BATTLE

Visitors to the municipality of Tuoro sul Trasimeno are invited to explore a historic route, in search of traces of Hannibal’s epic passage, as reconstructed by historian Giancarlo Susini, with the assistance of Professors Giovanni Brizzi and Ermanno Gambini. The itinerary crosses fields which would have formed the backdrop of the legendary battle between Rome and Carthage, in 217 BCE. The route is currently composed of thirteen stations, where information panels provide details on the history of the battle and other points of interest.

From station No. 1, visitors enjoy a wide vista over the valley. This lookout is, in effect, very close to the Malpasso Road along which the Roman legion advanced into the plain―most of these soldiers were marching to their death.
