STATION 03 – THE ROMAN ARMY

This panel paints a portrait of the Roman legion. Some of the men are shown wearing the kardiophylax, a metal pectoral armour plate which could be rectangular or round, while others are protected by the lorica hamata, a mail armour worn traditionally with simple shoulder plates, or with a cape or mantle in the style of the noblemen of Gaul.  Roman army helmets could also be issued in two different styles: the basic kind known as Montefortino and the more elaborate Etruscan-Corinthian style.
