STATION 09 – USTRINA

The bodies of dead soldiers piled atop the lakeside fields were soon stripped of arms and of their finest body armour. It took only a few days for the local citizens, who feared the spread of plagues and epidemics, to burn all the bodies. A vast number of funeral pyres were found in the valley west of Tuoro. These structures, ustrina in Latin, were probably built by Hannibal’s military men, the task of putting them to use being then completed by the locals.
